Well it's been four days back in the classroom and I have had a full on week but it has all been VERY exciting. This year, I have decided to use google presentations to help explain to the children our daily activities as well linking videos from YouTube to support our learning. Below is an example of the first day and the videos I used to help the children to create our classroom expectations.

I have found this activity worked successfully and children loved working collaboratively to find good and bad examples from the videos. The children were even more excited about the whole learning experience when they had the opportunity to create their own skits about what you might see in a good and a bad classroom. These examples can be found on our classroom blog.

I can definitely say I have some great actors and actresses in my room and if this is what they can produce on day 1 I am definitely looking forward to 2011.

Using Animoto I have created a small slideshow to introduce my wonderful students and the expectations we have created in our classroom. Please feel free to visit our classroom blog and leave a comment for my children they would love to hear from you.

Next week in my reading programme, I am introducing the concept of an iRead/ iListen, a programme which I saw over in America while I was on the Apple Bus Tour with Stuart Hale & Innes Kennard. I have just been reading 'Tech and Learning' Magazine from America and found some wonderful Web 2.0 tools that people could use in their classroom.

The first tool I am going to share is called Cacoo

Cacoo is an online drawing tool that makes Real-Time Collaboration a reality!

Cacoo enables Real-Time Collaboration. A diagram created with Cacoo can be edited by multiple people at the same time. Changes by users are reflected in real-time. Working with Cacoo makes it seem like everyone is working together in the same room and brings new meaning to the word Collaboration. (www.cacoo.com)

I have had a little play with this and thought you might like to see an example of it. I am thinking about the possibly of using this tool in my class as it is more up to date with its graphic designs/ images and the children will visually find this more appealing in comparison to 'Bubblus'

What are the features of this tool, the limitations & how would I use this in my class?

also after you have added a link to your blog or wiki, it will automatically updates it for you if you go back and make changes!

The only limitation I have found so far with this programme is that you are only allowed 25 free mindmaps but there is no one stopping you creating a new log in. From what I can see so far, you can only embedd it into your blog or wiki either as a link or export it as a PNG image but other than it, it's not a bad tool!

End of Year 2010

Well the past two years has gone by so quickly and I now find myself preparing myself to head back into the classroom teaching a group of Year 5 & 6 students at Lytton Street School, Feilding.

I am fortunate enough to be heading back to the school I left before becoming a facilitator as well as teaching in the same classroom. I have so many plans in my head and I am slowly planning where I should begin. I have already set up my class blog as well as my class wiki and with this I have also set up:

A class gmail account
Skype account
Edmodo Account
and many many more Web 2.0 tools

I have also decided to start using ePortfolios using wikispaces to record children's learning and I am getting quiet excited by it all. With the help of Apiti School we collaborated together to make some matrices which I will use through Google Docs as recording sheets as these automatically update themselves in the wiki. I have a matrix for written language, numeracy & oral language.

I am also looking forward to taking my:

iPod touch
iPad
Flip Video

into the classroom. The school that I am now employed with have also just had the go ahead by the BoT to purchase iPod & iPads which will be really exciting so I am beginning to plan how I can incorporate all these tools effectively.

I am going to continue blogging about my events, trials and tribulations which should be really exciting!

I would personally like to 'Thank' Geoff Lovegrove (Project Director) Rex Wheeler (Management Team) the principals and staff of the seven wonderful schools I have worked with. There have been challenges and highlights over the past two years and without this wonderful opportunity I believe I would have not grown into the teacher, professional and educator I am today.

Tips and Tricks:

Ask children to put the word TRASH in your title so when you do a search to clean up files you know that the word TRASH means it is a file to get rid of.
Remember to edit and film in the same screen size (eg. widescreen)

To show advance settings:

Do all the work first and then do the transitions after.

To edit frame by frame – hold down option/command keys and scroll mouse over it

Click on the track you want to hear, it will reduce (duck) the rest of the noise

This is away of looking at adults/ children’s learning and where they are at at the end of the learning outcome.

The workshop covered the indepth of thinking about writing and using learning intentions with the support of SOLO.

Pam challenged teachers to think about their own thinking ‘Are we challenging children to learn?’ Are we getting children to think critically and extend them by using good quality learning intentions. Using learning verbs/ HOT maps will help foster higher order thinking and make learning more specific.

Using the key verbs to write learning intentions – ‘We are learning to understand…’ Make sure they link to the meaning SOLO

This was an interesting break out and it’s blurb did not match the session. In this session we used a GPS to locate clues but the way the presenters set up the course I believed you could use other tools eg. a compass to do this task . I came away with some ideas practical ideas and how to implement them into the classroom.

Literacy: Get children to write clues for other children to seek around the school or classroom. These can either be in the form of a riddle or as math problems. This is very much like orientation but the activity is the tool that drives the learning.

What does it look like when it comes to student, adults and schools.

Student Learning Outcomes - examples of what quality learning looks like. SC, LI and co-construction. Allow children to make mental connections - each age group has a different amount of time for focus. (15 mins)

*Broken Ankle (ER - Assessment & Family Doctor - Assessment For Learning)
Assessment for learning is very similar to when you get a diagnosis from two different doctors for the same sport injury.

The first Doctor 1 you see examines your ankle he/she looks at it , takes an x-ray to check for any breaks and treats you for injury. He/She puts a BAND-AID on the injury and sends you home to carry on with life and the hope that this injury will never occur again

Doctor 2 who is the same building examines your ankles and asks questions about the injury and how it happened. He/She like the Doctor 1 checks the x-ray to ensure there are not breaks and then continues to give you further information to help with the recovery of your ankle. He/She then continues to provide you with some exercises ( strategies/exercise) to help you solve any problems on your own. He/She also gives you an action plan to help rehab your ankle so that if this same situation happened again you would have the strategies to deal with it.

Research: Has shown that specific descriptive feedback/ feed forward is vital for learners to achieve.

Some schools use highlighters and each colour has a specific meaning for each school

It's been while since I have used my blogger account to record my journey but here I am back again! I have changed over to Wordpress but have found it not as easy to use as BLOGGER. A lot has happened over the past year and as I see the year coming to an end I believe it is time to start reflecting over the major events that have happened during the year as well as forward planning for next year when I am back in the classroom, which I am really excited about it!

MSS Scavenger Hunt - Using A Cellphone

Using your cellphone complete the following tasks. Once you completed each question please text your answers to Ange.

1. Complete the following problem including 2 different strategies.
There ar 623 birds and 356 people. They all decide to purchase an animal each. How many animals were left?

2. Take a photo with at least 4 of your team members off the ground reenacting a pet taht is in a situation. Write 3 sentences about it.

3. Find the following book in the library 'Digger and Dumpers (600) Page 13. The bucket digs small holes such as.........' complete the following sentence. PLEASE make sure you put the book back where you found it.

4. Using the stop watch on your phone, time how many times it takes your team to walk around the netball court in 1 minute.

5. Using the video camera on your phone, record a 10 sec ad on how to look after your pet.

All you need is someone to set up an account and others may contribute to the wall even if they do not have an account. Thanks to Rachel Boyd for showing me this wonderful tool!

Picasa - What a tool!

As you can see from the examples above and below I have had great fun turning my experiences from ULearn into a collage and a video clip. Picasa is an easy tool to use to create and present recounts. You can either create an image, video and much much more.

Another plus about this programme is that your images you make can be posted straight to your blog or you can upload the video you have made to youtube. Talk about making life easy.

Have fun playing with it, it will definitely an easy tool for children to use.

Hi all!

It's been a while since I have actually blogged and I have decided that there is a need for my sanity to do so. This week at conference has again exciting, enlightening and empowering.

I have been facilitated for less than a year now and I have realised with the help of Jamin Litzen from twitter that there has been a huge growth in my professional developmental and the skills I have acquired due to this job so its time that I begin sharing more of what I have learnt and where I plan on going.

With this in mind, I have set some goals ( well told I have to..heheheh) with the help of a good friend and intend on presenting next year at Learning@Schools.....scary!!! Time to put my thinking hat on and inspire others with meaningful and usefultools, so watch this space for my development!

Trial Run using Sony Ericsson

Not much to see really! I have set up my phone to automatically send photos from my phone to my blog! Apparently it costs an extra $1 a day but I thought this would be a valuable teaching tool, learning tool and a great opportunity to try this new technology before I get back into the class!

Image being on a trip and taking a video or photo straight away with out having to upload it etc you can also change which blog it goes to but you have to be online to do so.

I intend on using it with this terms learning especially for reflections during my Jump Jam sessions.

Keep watching I'm sure it will be alot of fun.

Hi all!

Its been a while since I have blogged but I have seen some fine examples of learning with ICT that has taken place within my cluster. I have a group of fantastic LT's who are driving the learning in their schools and a fantastic group of children who I have been working with so to all 'Thank you so much'

I have been working in this job now for 2 terms and I have learnt some much and I can't wait to get back into the classroom only 6 terms to go!!

The power of oral language, as teachers some believe that oral language is just an add on and it's integrated into all learning area that take place but what happens when oral language is taught specifically? What do you see children doing? They begin to reflecting about what they are learning, they are aware of the audience and they begin thinking!

I have been really inspire this weekend by janenicholls e-fellow report on podcasting, it has really motivated me to think about the way I approach the children I teach and the tools I use. I am only working with children on a Tuesday at my school but will endeavor to make change for the good.

After reading Jane's report I have been thinking about setting a new goal for myself focused on oral language and using tools such as voice thread and pod casting to enhance learning and thinking skills. I'm not sure how I will approach this but am so inspired I know I will have something by the end of this weekend ( there goes working on the milestone report for another day....lol)

I would love to investigate and trial some of these ideas and thoughts in my own class but alas I have another 6 terms of facilitating before I can try all these exciting things I have learnt and found out.

My husband showed me this clip this morning and I have to admit it was emotionally inspiring and re affirmed that we as humans beings judge others by appearances. We all come into life with different walks, talks and looks but we all hold have somethings special about us that makes us an individual.

Found another cool yet easy web 2.0 tool (Blabberize) to use in the class. I am going to have a play and see what I can do with it relating to children's learning. My thoughts so far are maybe a photo of a child at an event eg.trip and then maybe children writing a personal recount and telling their story or possibly a report!

As I was observing 'TWITTER' today I was introduced to a new teaching tool by mguhlin and moodlegirl apparently it had been used as a practical joke on April Fools Day. Its a newspaper clipping generate you can embed it into your blog and very very easy for children and teacher to use!

A great motivator and a tool that children can relate to also it beats just publishing on the computer or writing it out! Check out my news report!

Boys And Their Toys!

I wanted to create some exemplars for my new wiki and ran around the house desperately trying to find a digital camera but alas when you want something you can never find it, so I decided to use my husbands cellphone.

My youngest daughter Inara has just started school 2 weeks ago so I thought she would be a good example of a child reading and pointing one to one. Check out her reading!

Have to admit we videoed this a few times but by the end of each recording, her one to one was getting better but she still insisted that she pointed to each word and I would have to agree YES! she was but she wasn't saying the words while she pointed at it. I think her next learning step might be to point to the word and then say it...lol!

Where would I have been without my husband's cellphone..hmmm might suggest to him I need a new one!

Feilding ICT Cluster Mini Taster!

Yesterday we held our first I.C.T Mini Taster for the cluster. This is where teachers come for PD eat lots of food, go to two mini professional development sessions for 15 mins each and then go home. Nice short, sharp and really easy.

Blings, Rings and Things That Go Pop!

I haven't been blogging lately due to a close family member passing away but as he would say ' Life goes on so don't stop because of me' so here I am back on board the ICT train.

It's been interesting watching teachers responses to new learning and technology. Some have embraced it, others have been blown away and some have just sat and watched waiting for it to age expecting things to happen as time passes by.

Today was like every other day I spent time organising, working and planning ideas for my next teaching journey but today's encounter was an interesting scenario... so here is the story.

As teachers, we are aware that we have a huge melting pot of children that enter our door each year. They arrive with different walks and talks of life and I guess as a facilitator I to have a huge pot, just with teachers.

We celebrate and embrace the ones that show interest in what to we are passionate about but how do their successes affect those who are unsure, hesitant or unsure.

I have a group of teachers who are very skilled with I.C.T and like to use all the bells and whistles to make things look good, this can at times be off putting for others who are not as confident and today I saw this.

After a long lengthy discussion with some teachers it was heart breaking to see how one little bit of excitement can shattered a persons confident. Yet how do you say to someone that is excited about their learning not to do what they do!

So what are your thoughts?? I would be interested to hear how you would deal with this situation...

Something Must Be Working!

When All Else Fails!

Had a fantastic session organised with my Techie Angels & Wizards today but you know when your excited about things STUFF hits the fan our network went down!!!!!

We had planned today to visit digitallearn son's blog today as a motivator for the Year 3-4 children to start blogging but that failed. Had also set up a new blog for my children lssdigitallearners.blogspot.com but can't access web and my seniors Year 5-6 are getting ready to use garage band to record their music track...but alas it just wasn't meant to happen today! Let's hope that on Friday when I try again things might be different!

To Screen Capture or Not To Screen Capture!

Being the Mac user that I am... well now I am, I was always under the assumption that you needed screen capture software on a PC. Well guess what! I learnt something new today- Many thanks to my partner in crime 'Jenny'

Here are the steps that you need to take on most PCs to do a simple screen capture:

1. Access the screen that you want to capture, whether that's your desktop or an Internet page or whatever.
2. Now look at your keyboard. Find the button that says "prt sc". On some computers, it will say "PrtScn". Either way, it's short for "print screen". It's normally located in the top right corner of your keyboard near the other function buttons on the computer.
3. Determine whether or not you will also need to use your "shift" key. If your "prt sc" button is a button of its own, you won't. If it's got other functions on it, you might. (Like with other buttons, if "prt sc" is on the top half of the button, it requires "shift" to be accessed.) Try pressing it by itself if you aren't sure. If that doesn't work, you can come back to this step and try adding "alt".
4. Optional step: If you want to only capture the "active" screen and not the other materials that you may see on your computer at this time, you will hit "alt" before hitting the "prt sc" button.
5. Once you've pressed "print screen", your computer should have done the screen capture. However, it needs somewhere to put the image that you've capture. You'll need to open your favorite image editing program. Paste the image into the program using any of the paste methods: Ctrl + V, right click and paste or file-paste.
6. Edit the image in any way that you see fit. This is an option step for screen capture.
7. Save the file. Name it and store in it such a way that you will be able to find it later. After all, you didn't just capture the image to go ahead and lose it!

Textorize or Respect!

Had a great session with my Year 3-4 students today. They learnt how to textorize a picture!

Our learning intention was W.A.L.T: use key words to state to people how to be respectful. The children first brainstormed key ideas of what we would be doing if we were respecting people. They then talked about what respect would look like if we took a picture.

Here is one of their pieces of work! Check out the words on the picture to see if you agree that the words match the picture!

MSS Visit

Today was my first facilitator visit, well actually educating the teachers and I would have to say they were a great group to work with! Like most schools I have visited, they have had frustrations with their network and systems so showing teachers how to use WEB 2.0 tools was very very limited.

This visit reinforced for me how important it is to use the tools/ programmes we have well cause when all else fails its those tools/ programmes are the ones that will vehicle our childrens' learning.

Here are some examples of teachers work for juniors to use during literacy:

Didn't they do well considering they have hardware which was born in the ice age and a network that doesn't know if its coming or going!

Another Fantastic but Frustrating Teaching Tool!

This weekend has been so eventful well so far! I have found lots of new web 2 tools and have had lots of fun playing with them, as you can see! Here is an online tool textorize and I must say it would have to be my favourite but I have to admit most frustrating tool yet. Adding the image link was a mission but thanks to my hubby I found out it was a lot simpler that I thought.

Here are the instructions on how to use this tool but first check out my picture which I made with my story embedded in it!

Even though I had a lot of fun learning how to use textorize, it was still frustrating!
Anyway here is how to use it:
* You will need to upload your selected photo on to flickr
* Once you have select the image right click on it to view the image url address
* Copy the URL address and paste it into the link to image box on the textorize site
* Write/ type your story in the text box
* Adjust the number of lines, text size and colour adjustment as needed and then hit the textorize button at the bottom.

Taaa daaa you have your picture but BEWARE if you don't have a screen capture software you can't save it well as JPG or other image file. You can save it as a web page but this is useless if you want to embedded it into a blog!

There is software that you can download for this programme but I find extremely frustrating to use so I recommend to do it this way!

This programme is very easy to use. Children get to explore animation without all the hassle. Links well to literacy I would use this freeware with the older students possibly Year 3 (8 years) and upwards.

Just One Of Those Days!

Today is the designated day I have as a teacher in my school (Lytton Street) this is where I get to work with children...oh so much fun, I so love working with the kids especially when things click.

I was lucky to work with my Techie Angels/Wizard (Year 1-2) this morning and some of the children drew some fantastic pictures using kidpix about 'respect' We had some real meaningful discussion about respect and the kids where fantastic. Here they are some of their work and thoughts!

I am also working with an older group of students (year 5&6) and we are using i-Movie to vehicle their learning about 'respect' We have decide to use Aretha Franklin's song 'Respect' to drive our message to the school.

My Daughter's Blogs!

My Mother has just informed me that she will be taking my two oldest daughters to Malaysia for a month. What an experience for two young girls so in order to keep in contact with them we have decided to start up a blog. They had so much fun adding gadets, pictures as well learning about the audience and thinking about who they will be writing for.
Above are some of their pictures they took so they could practice adding images onto their blog! I am so looking forward to teaching them some more tools and learning experiences which I feel will be important to them later on in life!

Welcome to my new blog! I have been lucky enough to be put in the position of the ICT Facilitator for Feilding! What an amazing opportunity and a special gift. I have been at the Learning At School Conference in Rotorua and had the privilege of meeting those people who have inspired me on my personal learning journey.
